Doris Shelton Cockrum
August 23, 1917 - May 2, 2012

Mrs. Doris Shelton Cockrum of Iuka, Miss., died May 2, 2012 at Southern Magnolia Estates in Iuka, Miss., at the age of 94 years 8 months and 9 days. Mrs. Cockrum, the daughter of Barnett Varner and Hallie Lostutter Varner, was born August 23, 1917 in Black Oak, Ark. She graduated from Black Oak High School in 1935 and attended Arkansas State. Mrs. Cockrum lived in Trumann most of her life and will be remembered for many acts of community service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Trumann, member of the Poinsettia Club, Charter member of the Poinsettia Democratic Women, and past Blytheville District President for the Arkansas Federation of Women. In 1983, she was appointed to the Trumann Library Board and served on the City Beautification Committee. She was elected and served several terms on the Trumann City Council. In 1979 she retired from Trumann Water and Sewer Co. after 27 years. Prior to that, she taught school in the Trumann School District. She was preceded in death by her first husband Willie D. Shelton in 1980 and her second husband Harold R.
