  34. Danny Harvison, Trumann says

We wish to send our condolences to the Smith family. If there was ever someone who made a difference in our community that someone had to be Dr. Smith. He will be missed greatly. Everyone has their Dr. Smith story. One of our favorites was about the time that my dad was in the hospital in Jonesboro. He was sitting in the recliner next to the bed when he dozed off. When he woke up there was Dr. Smith laying in his bed watching T.V. He was that kind of person. Many in our community owe much to Dr. Smith and we are grateful.

  35. Brad Baker, Jonesboro says

It's very difficult to imagine Trumann without Dr. Smith. There has been no better friend to the people of Trumann than Dr. Smith. His role as the family doctor for so many people over the years will never be equaled. No one could ever know just how many people he treated, helped and saved, even his best friends. My Dad and Mom (L B & Jimmie Doris) had so many great experiences with the Smiths, from birthing Brent to spending so many weekends at Lions meetings. The camaraderie between Dr. Smith and my Dad was funny, educational and warm...they still argued (in a friendly way) over a dinner bill from a convention 25 years ago. I am sure he would understand that I missed his funeral because I was at a Lions meeting in Michigan. I'll drink a toast to all those old heads (LB, Dr. Smith, Paul Thompson, Frank Hyneman and all the others). And like those other pillars of the community who perceded him, Dr. Smith will be sorely missed. God bless all those in the Smith family, our prayers are with you.

I send my condolences to the Smith family. I can see that I wasn't the only one who trusted ONLY Dr. Smith to take care of me. I wouldn't think of going to another doctor and I never did until I was grown and moved away. I still haven't found one I liked or trusted as much.I was his patient from age nine and I think he treated all of the kids like he was a our parent because he always told us what to do and wanted what was best for us.This is a great loss for all of us who grew up in Trumann. Everyone has a Dr. Smith story because he was so special to all of us and to a few generations after mine.

  42. Beth McClung Nunnally, Bentonville, AR says

Dr. Smith is a big part of my childhood memories. He and my Dad, Ray McClung, were friends. When he made house calls to our house he never knew what was going to happen. One time we held him hostage on the front porch by spraying him with the water hose until Mama came out and made us quit. He would always laugh and shake his head and say that there was never a dull moment at the McClung house. With 5 kids in the family we saw a lot of Dr. Smith. He delivered 2 of my brothers, Gary and Alan, and made sure all of us stayed well. Not everyone knew when he made a house call that if you locked yourself in the bathroom when Dr. Smith was going to give you a shot he would talk you into unlocking the door by giving you a quarter. After I grew up and got married he was still my Doctor and he delivered my first son. Dr. Smith will always have a special place in my heart, he was one of a kind. You are all in my prayers.

  56. PAUL CLAYTON, TUCKERMAN,AR says

  57. Debra Jean Swindle, Titusville, Florida says

I would just like to say that back in 1959, Dr. Smith delivered a bouncing baby girl,(Me) to a woman whose husband was serving his country in the Navy.I think I was 9 months old before my Daddy ever saw me.During that time, Dr. Smith fixed my "tongue-tied" problem(which may have been a bad decision,LOL!) but I'm so thankful for it.After my Daddy returned home, we were shipped out again, but no matter where we ended up, every time we landed in Trumann, Arkansas, he was our family physician.I will personally never forget Dr. Smith. If it wasn't for him I would'nt be here and my Aunt Geraldine (Gerry)wouldn't be my surrogate father! LOL !!! Remember...my Daddy was on board a ship so someone had to take Momma to the hospital!!From what I hear, it was pretty funny, the nurse thinking my Aunt was my Daddy!Beside all that though, I think Dr. Smith saw me through the majority of my childhood illnesses ,and also diagnosed me 'with child' twice.I would have liked him to deliver my children but he wasn't set up for it anymore, but after they were born he was their primary Doc until he retired.I'll never forget him, God bless him. Debi (Swindle) Martin

  64. Keith Clem, Worcester, Massachusetts says

I was very sad to hear that Dr. Smith passed away. He was my doctor from early childhood until the time I left for college. When I was a small child he would always joke around with me and usually could make me forget I was at a doctor's office. I remember once at the end of a visit his nurse came in to give me a shot and I asked that he do it instead. When the nurse told him he immediately dropped what he was doing and came back to the room to give me the shot himself. Many people can learn methods to be a doctor, but the compassion to be a real healer is something they have to find for themselves. I'd like to think Dr. Smith's example took hold in many other physicans who are practicing today.I wish his family peace and warm memories.Keith

"Doc" was in our house every week week when my grandparents were alive. He would come to the house and take care of them. Many times if he was in the neighborhood he would just drop by to visit with Nettie and Cecil. I grew to love the man for his compassion, honesty and just being "Doc". 98. Debbye (Farmer) Davis, Trumann, AR says

Dr. Smith was such a wonderful man. He was always my childhood doctor and continued to be my family doctor after I became an adult and got married. I, along with so many other people in this and the surrounding area, dearly loved him to death. Dr. Smith sat in front of me each Wednesday at Lions Club and between my dad, Bob Farmer, and Melvin Dycus. I always enjoined visiting with him each Wednesday at noon and had been asking everyone about him because I had missed talking to him on Wednesday for the past couple of weeks. Each time I would be at the funeral home for visitation, it seems like I would always run into him there as well. "Doc" will be greatly missed at our weekly meetings and please know, if there is anything that any of us (as a group) or that I can do for the family, please feel free to contact me. Bryan and Lettie know how to reach me at Kelley Webb's office during the days. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you. Debbye (Farmer) Davis

  104. Tom Balcom, Trumann says

Doc asked me every Sunday if anyone had given me a 'positive' compliment today. I can say the very fact he took time to whip up one of his 'derogotory' comments was in itself a very good compliment to me. I am glad he felt good enough most days to simply shake my hand but even more so to show his friendship by offering up his little quips and barbs. Doc had a lot friends because he was friendly to everyone. How I will miss my 'Sunday Buddy" . My sincere sympathy to you June and to all the rest of the family. Tom Balcom .
